Call for Proposals: European Sanctions in Perspective: History, Practice, and Policy
The SGH Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) and the Centre for Finance and Security (CFS) at RUSI, with the support of the Multidisciplinary International Network on Sanctions (MINOS), invite the submission of paper proposals for an international academic conference on sanctions.
The conference will take place on 24-25 September 2026 (Thu-Fri) in Warsaw, hosted at the Warsaw School of Economics. It will bring together scholars and experts working on the evolution, design, implementation, and effectiveness of sanctions in light of recent global developments, with particular attention to Central and Eastern Europe.Conference Background
Sanctions have long been instruments of international diplomacy, but their scope, intensity, and visibility have expanded significantly following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This conference situates contemporary sanctions regimes within a longer historical and analytical perspective, examining how past experiences inform current practice and how today’s unprecedented measures are reshaping European and global sanctions frameworks.
A core objective of the conference is to foster and showcase academic research on sanctions in Central Europe, a region that has moved from the periphery to the forefront of sanctions design, implementation, and enforcement. We particularly encourage submissions from scholars based in Central Europe and Ukraine, as well as work engaging empirically or conceptually with these regions.
The conference will also explore the evolving role of the United Kingdom in European sanctions policy and the implications of EU–UK coordination for future security and economic governance.Themes and Panels
