WERI Conference 2023

The World Economy Research Institute’s 18th Annual Conference on Innovation and Competitiveness

Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Competitiveness: How Are They Connected and Why Do They Matter?

The World Economy Research Institute at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics is delighted to announce the 18th Annual Conference on Innovation and Competitiveness.

In today’s world, sustainable competitiveness is no longer built on such staple elements as economies of scale, but rather on curve-jumping and curve-defining innovations. Entrepreneurship serves as the cornerstone for both innovation and inter-firm competition, playing a pivotal role within the broader national economy. The future of entrepreneurship is heavily dependent on how well countries will handle the economic turbulence caused by the threat of recession, pandemic, and war in Ukraine.

Competitiveness, a multifaceted concept, drives diverse economic research uncovering new determinants of socio-economic development and their interrelationships. This conference will serve as a forum for the discussion about competitiveness, innovation and entrepreneurship during times of multiple crises, which will encompass, among other things:

  • the theoretical background of the issue of international competitiveness, taking into account the latest scientific developments;
  • the international competitive position of Poland and other EU countries ;
  • the importance of the factors crucial to the competitive ability of the economy, and their analysis in terms of linkages with entrepreneurship;
  • the trends in entrepreneurship development in Poland and in other EU member states, with particular emphasis on new business formation, technological entrepreneurship, innovation, and clusters.

We hope that the World Economy Research Institute’s 18th Annual Conference will provide inspiration for further discussion on shaping the competitiveness of economies, its traditional and novel factors, and the role of entrepreneurship in this process.

The keynote speech titled “Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Public Policy: Evidence from Major U.S. Cities” will be delivered by Professor Scott W. Hegerty, PhD, who currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Anthropology, Economics, Geography & Environmental Studies, Global Studies, and Philosophy at Northeastern Illinois University (USA).
