What factors determine export competitiveness? Analysis based on Bayesian model averaging.

The purpose of this study is to analyse what factors have a major impact on the export competitiveness of countries, which is measured by the share of their exports in the value of global exports.

Factors included in the analysis will cover, among others, those related to price competitiveness (e.g. changes in the real effective exchange rate), institutional (e.g. rule of law), economic policy (e.g. fiscal policy), development of financial markets in a given country, demography and the level of economic development. Furthermore, the study also intends to analyse the main determinants of the price competitiveness of the exports (changes in real effective exchange rate), which will constitute a separate article. Key hypotheses and research questions:

  1. The importance of intratemporal factors (affecting the competitiveness in a given period, e.g. real effective exchange rate) and intertemporal factors (related to the level of economic development, demography, etc.) for export competitiveness.
  2. The level of economic development affects what factors are crucial for export competitiveness.
  3. There are geographical differences among the most important factors affecting export competitiveness.
