Apart from teaching, scientific activity plays the main role at the University. Contents and results of scientific research successfully support the teaching process and decide on the level of education of academics.

At the SGH Warsaw School of Economics research is conducted in the field of social sciences, primarily in the discipline of economics and finance, management and quality sciences, as well as political and administration sciences and legal sciences.

Our researchers belong to the best, globally recognisable economists from Poland, they lead in international rankings, are awarded for publications and research results. They receive prestigious awards granted by the National Science Centre, foundations, magazines and renowned institutions. Academics from the SGH Warsaw School of Economics are distinguished with public activity, they actively cooperate with the European Union institutions, they are also experts and reviewers of the European Commission and European research institutions.

The SGH Warsaw School of Economics is recognised as the best research university in the scope of economics and finance, which is confirmed by the highest category for university units granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The research activity is concentrated in institutes, departments and units forming five collegia.

Collegium of Economic Analysis

The Collegium of Economic Analysis is one of two leading units in the area of economic sciences in Poland – as a result of categorisation of scientific units in 2017, it received the prestigious category A+ for the second time.

The Collegium conducts both basic and application research in the field of macro- and microeconomics, economic policy, mathematical economics, financial and insurance mathematics, econometrics and decision making theory, statistics and demography, operational research, business informatics and related fields. In these areas the Collegium educates students of Bachelor, Master, Doctoral and post-graduate studies.

Scientific research

Scientific research of the Collegium is of an interdisciplinary character both in substantive and organisational terms. The research primarily concerns systemic transformation, economic policy and situation, measurement methods and economic, demographic and social processes’ analysis methods, as well as the broadly understood informatics and use thereof in the social and business sphere. Institutes and departments cooperate in the sphere of research projects and teaching programmes. Numerous employees of the Collegium act as advisors and experts of state and business institutions.

Collegium of Socio-Economics

The Collegium of Socio-Economics of the SGH Warsaw School of Economics was established on the grounds of the Department of Economics and Social Science of the Main School of Planning and Statistics. Its history dates back over 50 years. However, through this period the Collegium remained the most interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary organisational unit of the SGH Warsaw School of Economics.

The significant scientific potential of departments representing fundamental sciences, among others: economics, sociology, philosophy, political sciences, social policy, law and history allows participation of Collegium teams in numerous all-Poland and international research concerning particular sectoral public policies.

The Collegium is an important opinion-forming and expert centre at the national and European level. Employees and graduates thereof hold important positions in the political and business life of Poland, as well as European institutions, provide knowledge and expert experience to business and financial entities in the country and abroad, non-governmental organisations and international organisations.

Scientific research

Scientific research is conducted within obtained grants (among others NCN or EU) and funds granted by the ministry of higher education both to maintain the research potential of employees and research conducted by young scientists (usually doctoral students of the Collegium of Socio-Economics).
The scientific and research activity consists in many research areas. They are related to the subject matter concerning the broadly understood theory of economics, i.e. issues regarding growth, economic growth, innovativeness, globalisation, economic policy and history; the issue of finance and banking and primarily issues related to financial markets, their development, stability, impact on the real economy and the role of public sector; the socio-economic, legal-political subject matter by a numerous group of scientists, among whom there are social politicians, sociologists, political scientists, lawyers, philosophers.

Collegium of World Economy

The Collegium of World Economy is a continuation of the Foreign Trade Faculty of the Main School of Planning and Statistics/the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. The scientific and research and teaching activity of employees concentrates not only on transformations in the contemporary world economy and in the field of the international activity of enterprises, but also on providing knowledge in this scope to students of Bachelor, Master, Doctoral and post-graduate studies.

Scientific research

The research conducted in the Collegium of the World Economy concerns, in particular: international aspects of functioning of domestic economies, regions, industries and enterprises, and economic integration including, in particular the subject matter of the European Union.

The research programme of the Collegium of World Economy for 2017–2025 is entitled: “Zmiany w gospodarce światowej a konkurencyjność gospodarek, regionów i przedsiębiorstw” (“Changes in the World Economy and Competitiveness of Economies, Regions and Enterprises”).

Main directions of this research programme until 2020 are the following:

  • New phenomena in the world economy and consequences thereof for Poland (among others new economic centres of the world, globalisation/glocalisation; global value chains; international migrations; trade arrangements; sharing economy; development of information technologies; international expansion of enterprises; the use of the Internet).
  • Integration and disintegration processes in the world economy (among others structural changes in the EU, Poland in the European Union, Asian integration).
  • Intelligent, sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development in the conditions of globalising markets (among others digitalisation, ICT, inclusivity, energy, environment, fourth industrial revolution).
  • Determinants of the international competitiveness of economies, regions, branches, industries and enterprises (among others: institutions; human capital, financial capital, innovations, foreign trade, direct investments, technology transfer, international entrepreneurship, internationalisation and de-internationalisation of enterprises, competitiveness of location, urbanisation, business models, strategies of enterprises in international business, cultural conditions of the international cooperation of enterprises, new phenomena in marketing, consumer on the global market).
  • Economic sciences for socio-economic policy (among others new industrial policy, innovative policy, financial policy, international economic policy, economic policy of the European Union and Eurozone countries).

Collegium of Business Administration

The Collegium of Business Administration is a leading and, at the same time, unique scientific and research unit that deals with various aspects of corporate management and development strategies in the contemporary market economy. The Collegium joins scientific units of the University of a similar profile, dealing with practical and theoretical issues of the broadly understood market environment of enterprises, provides the academics studying various aspects of an enterprise with an excellent working place. Scientific and research works are aimed at the identification of factors and mechanisms of corporate development, which is to facilitate joining the group of innovative, modern, dynamically developing companies using the knowledge-based business strategies by Polish enterprises.

Scientific research

The Collegium is an important opinion-forming and expert centre at the national and European level. Furthermore, our employees hold important positions in the political and economic life of Poland, cooperate with national and international organisations, as well as are independent experts of many research, economic and financial institutions, and scientific centres both Polish and foreign.
The scientific-research and teaching profile of the Collegium takes into consideration both the hitherto scientific achievements, as well as the changing challenges and needs of practice. Scientific-research works performed at the Collegium of Business Administration include:

  • Identification of the fields, factors and mechanisms which can, in the perspective of the nearest years, allow Polish enterprises to join the group of modern, dynamically developing and competitive companies using knowledge-based business strategies.
  • Identification of possible sources of success of enterprises and potential reasons for failures, including crisis conditions.
  • Results of many studies are of warning forecasts’ character. The majority provides grounds for recommendations for practice, therefore, the studies have application value. Our cooperation with the business environment, enterprises in the scope of implementation and verification of conducted scientific research allows Polish entrepreneurs to join the group of modern and dynamically developing companies using knowledge-based business strategies.

Collegium of Management and Finance

The Collegium of Management and Finance is composed of six institutes and four departments. Institutes and departments of the Collegium conduct research in the scope of economics, finance and management sciences, as well as legal sciences and spatial economy. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education granted the scientific category A to the Collegium for the years 2017–2020.

Scientific research

Institutes and departments of the Collegium of Management and Finance conduct research in the scope of economics, finance and management sciences, as well as legal sciences and spatial economy.
The research subject matter covers the following issues:

  • Economic growth and the role of the state in shaping economic processes in the market economy (development, fiscal and monetary policy).
  • Financial intermediary system (banking, insurance, financial markets).
  • Management of organisations (modern management instruments, analysis of various organisational forms of enterprises – from family businesses and start-ups to capital groups).
  • Consumer (household) and consumption structure.
  • Public finance reform and public-private partnership at a regional and local level.
  • Healthcare system reform.
