European Sanctions in Perspective: Theory and Policy after Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion

The conference will explore the evolution of economic sanctions as instruments of international diplomacy, with particular attention to the changes that have followed Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Discussions will examine how historical experience can inform current sanctions strategies, how the unprecedented scope of recent sanctions is reshaping the European sanctions framework, and what role sanctions may play in the future of international security and economic relations.

Particular attention will be given to Central Europe. The conference will consider the region’s changing role in shaping European and global sanctions regimes, including its growing importance in policy design and sanctions implementation.

The event will bring together scholars and academics from across Europe to discuss the evolution of sanctions, lessons from history and the implications of the rapidly changing international environment, with a particular focus on Central Europe.
