Are you interested in the environment, sustainability, and real‑world challenges facing coastal regions? Join BUP Science & Sail, an international summer school that combines science, fieldwork, and adventure – all by the Baltic Sea!
Science & Sail is organized by the Baltic University Programme (BUP) in cooperation with Klaipėda University and Riga Technical University (Campus Liepāja). It is part of the Swedish Institute–funded project “CoMaDe – Coastal and Marine Development through Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Learning”, which brings students together from across the Baltic Sea region to tackle sustainability challenges.
One of the highlights of the summer school is a full day on board Klaipėda University’s sailing vessel, Brabander. You’ll sail from Klaipėda to Liepāja, collect samples, conduct measurements, and experience hands‑on marine research in real conditions.
You will also:
- Explore the Curonian Spit, a unique coastal ecosystem
- Visit Šventoji settlement and the Seaside Regional Park
- Learn how climate change, biodiversity loss, and human activities affect coastal and marine environments
All field trips are accompanied by lectures, workshops, and seminars, helping you connect theory with practice.
A core part of the summer school is creative group case studies:
- You’ll work in small, international teams
- Each group is supported by PhD student supervisors
- Before the summer school, you’ll prepare research questions and a case study plan
- During the course, you’ll collect data, consult experts, analyze indicators, and draw conclusions
On the final day, each group will present their findings to other participants.
What Do You Get?
- Hands‑on field and research experience
- International networking with students, PhDs, and experts
- Practical skills in sustainability and coastal development
