RID Seminar: Decision Making Under Uncertain Conditions: Systems Thinking and Its Application in Research, Luca Carrubbo

Today’s world is characterized by increasing complexity, uncertainty, and rapid change. Factors such as digital transformation, global value chains, climate change, geopolitical tensions, and the development of artificial intelligence (AI) influence how public and private organizations design strategies, operating models, and decision-making processes. In such an environment, traditional linear analytical models often prove insufficient. Organizations operate within interconnected, adaptive, and nonlinear systems, which require analytical tools capable of capturing relationships, dynamics, and feedback loops. Systems thinking facilitates this by enabling researchers and practitioners to view organizations as open systems, identify causal structures and leverage points, and design strategies that are more resilient, flexible, and adaptive. This systemic perspective is closely linked with service-dominant logic, decision support systems (DSS), data- and AI-driven decision-making, and value co-creation with stakeholders. Systems thinking is therefore an important research approach not only in management studies, but also in economics, political science, and public administration, supporting interdisciplinary inquiry into complex contemporary challenges.

The seminar will introduce participants—including faculty members, early-career researchers, and PhD candidates—to the foundations, principles, and research applications of systems thinking. Participants will gain insights into how this approach can enhance theory building, methodological choices, and analytical practices in research.
