RID Seminar: Crime and Economics: Estimating Costs and Consequences through Selected Case Studies

The seminar will explore the economic costs and consequences of crime through selected case studies. Topics include the relationship between alcohol consumption and crime, the ageing prison population, unemployment insurance for people leaving prison, and the costs of domestic violence and stalking.

The invited guests are Prof. Christian Traxler (Hertie School, Berlin) and Dr Eva Bertok (University of Ljubljana). Researchers from SGH Warsaw School of Economics will also present the results of their research.

Invited guests

Prof. Christian Traxler is Professor of Economics at the Hertie School in Berlin. His research spans a wide range of topics in public economics. He studies tax compliance and law-enforcement strategies and evaluates the impact of conventional and behavioural policy interventions. Before joining the Hertie School in 2013, he was Professor of Economics at the University of Marburg. From 2006 to 2011, he held research and visiting positions at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods (Bonn), the University of Amsterdam, and the Office of Tax Policy Research at the University of Michigan. He studied economics at the University of Vienna, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and LMU Munich, where he earned his PhD in 2006.

Dr Eva Bertok is a Research Associate at the Institute of Criminology, Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana. Her research focuses primarily on empirical criminology and victimology. Her main areas of interest include stalking, domestic and intimate partner violence, restraining orders, prison climate and quality of prison life, peer and dating violence, and juvenile delinquency. Her work frequently combines quantitative and qualitative approaches and draws on survey research, police and criminal justice data, and institution-based research. She currently leads the research project Stalking as a Form of Domestic Violence, funded by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency and the Slovenian Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities.
