About Prof. Charl de Villiers

Prof. de Villiers is Professor of Accounting at the University of Auckland and a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to sustainability accounting. He also holds positions as Adjunct Professor at the University of Cape Town and the University of Pretoria.
He is the author of over 500 research-based publications and presentations, including more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Meditari Accountancy Research and sits on the editorial boards of 10 academic journals.
His work has been cited over 20,000 times, with an h-index above 60, and he is ranked by Stanford University among:
- the Top 100 accounting academics globally (lifetime citations)
- the Top 50 for annual citations
- the Top 2% of scientists worldwide
He is also an inductee of the AAAJ/APIRA Hall of Fame (2022) and the CSEAR Hall of Fame (2024).
