Extramural doctorate

Doctoral candidates have the option of preparing their doctoral thesis in a taught programme (doctoral schools) and via the extramural mode.

In the case of an extramural doctorate, the doctoral applicant must apply for the appointment of a supervisor (or supervisors) before the procedure can be commenced.

Pursuant to Article 182 of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science, a candidate who applies for a doctoral degree through the extramural mode must pay a fee for the relevant procedure to be conducted.

The university concludes an agreement with either the candidate or the candidate’s employer (university) to cover the costs of the procedure. The fee may also be paid by another natural or legal person, as well as by an organisational unit without legal personality, including the candidate’s employer.
