20 years together in the EU: Achievements and challenges - German and Polish perspectives
(20 Jahre gemeinsam in der EU: Errungenschaften und Herausforderungen – deutsche und polnischen Perspektiven)

The year 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the accession of Poland and seven other formerly communist countries from Central and Eastern Europe into the European Union (EU), making it the largest in-one-go enlargement of the EU. It not only helped Poland and the other new post-communist member states to complete successfully their political and economic reforms, but also created new business opportunities for both new and old member states. At the same time, during these 20 years, the EU-27 has been plagued by multiple crises, including the eurozone and the migration crises, Brexit, and lately the war in Ukraine and an increasingly instable geopolitical environment. Simultaneously, the EU faces as a stagnating economic development coupled with technological disruptions and environmental challenges and the prospect of further enlargements – involving the Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova. This continuously raises new challenges on how to ensure and improve the EU’s workability and competitiveness.

Against this background, the conference will reflect on the past 20 years of EU’s eastern enlargement mainly, but not exclusively from a Polish and German perspectives. It takes stock of what has been achieved, what lessons can be learnt and discusses how current challenges can best be met. For this we invite representatives from economics, political sciences, and related disciplines as well as practitioners from business and politics to participate in this debate with written and/or oral contributions.

dr hab. Jürgen Wandel, prof. SGH

Jürgen Wandel is professor of economics at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. He is the head of the Chair of the German Economy at World Economy Research Institute of SGH and director of the Polish-German Academic Forum which organizes the German-speaking studying program “Management of Polish-German Business Relations” at SGH in cooperation with the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Germany) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

dr hab. Andreas Bielig

Andreas Bielig (Prof. SGH) is since 2006 member of scientific staff of the German Economy Research Unit. In 2006-2012 he established as first DAAD Fachlektor Wirtschaft with a DAAD scholarship the institution Fachlektorat Wirtschaft of Polish-German Academic Forum at the Warsaw School of Economics. Here he is still active in organization and teaching. He graduated in Economics from the University of Leipzig (Dipl.-Vw.), gained his PhD degree in Economics (Dr. rer. pol.) at the Technical University of Ilmenau.

dr hab. Paweł Lesiak

Researcher and lecturer at the Warsaw School of Economics since 1996. An alumnus of transport economists Prof. Eufemia Teichmann and Prof. Włodzimierz Januszkiewicz. In 2001, he obtained a PhD degree in economics for defending his dissertation entitled “The impact of the accession of Polish to the European Union on the road freight transport market”.

dr Katarzyna Kamińska

Katarzyna Kaminska (PhD) studied economics at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. In 2014, she obtained the title of doctor of economic sciences there for work titled „Ordoliberalism and Keynesianism - two contradictory doctrines in the economic policy of post-war Germany”. In 2016, she won the first prize of the President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection in Wa

rsaw for the best doctoral dissertation devoted to the economization of competition law. From March 2018, she works at the Department of Research on the German Economy.

dr Waldemar Milewicz

Waldemar Milewicz (PhD) is assistant professor at Warsaw School of Economics (German Economy Research Unit, Collegium of World Economy). He studied Finance and Banking (specialization „Banking”) and Management and Marketing (specialization „Finance Management in Enterprise”) at Warsaw School of Economics. During his studies he was holder of German Academic Exchange Service’s vacation scholarship and winter semester scholarship (Socrates-Erasmus) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
