The turn of the 20th and 21st century is characterized by a radical transformation of many businesses which, so far, operated on the global market in a traditional manner, whereby the search for possibilities of creating and developing high-vale businesses is clearly marked.

In 1993, under the supervision of Professor Andrzej Herman, pioneering works were launched in Poland in the area of theory and practice of value based management.

Currently, this research orientation is being continued and developed, taking into account the latest trends related to the change of paradigm in management sciences. This change is a consequence of, among others, the development of global network organizations, importance of intangible assets and growing role of new information and communication technologies.

The most interesting field of research in this context is posed by innovative, flexible, high-value small and medium businesses, as they are able to adjust to the challenges of a changing and increasingly uncertain environment most efficiently. Contemporary economic theory, as well as theory and practice of business management form methodological foundations of the scientific and didactic program of the Department.

To this end, available theoretical and empirical approaches are used, aiming at combining micro, macro and global view of a company in order to investigate and show how to increase its value.
